Frag! Help this Wonka get crash space at BayCon! [30 Apr 2007|07:56am]

[ mood | anxious ]

I'm crossposting this everywhere because I am a desperate Wonka who doesn't wish to commute back and forth between convention and home.

Does anyone have crash space at the BayCon Hotel this year?  I have had two rooms yanked out from underneath me in quick succession.

I don't take up much space and can pay my share of the room.

From Neil Gaiman's blog, I know nothing about this beyond what he shared:
Person sending in email:
Hey there,
I know you're a fan of Lemony Snicket and the 826 Valencia project. Would you mind pointing people to the 5th Annual Comedy Night fundraiser thingummy they're doing tomorrow night in San Francisco? (And I know his photo's not on the poster, but Daniel Handler is going to be there)

Consider it done.

Godzilla curiosity [16 Feb 2007|08:23am]

[ mood | dorky ]

10:23 PM 1/25/07 · In the 90's version of Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, in battle with the Big Guy, the engine room winds up on fire. Now maybe Star Trek has warped me somewhat but I have a hard time picturing an engine room that doesn't have an engineering staff.

So, why is it when they abandon ship only the pilots get out?

Spidey [06 Nov 2006|10:57am]

[ mood | worried ]

Mentioned this a few times before but I'm doing it again because this one's getting xposted!

I've got a Spidey community and I've been working on a mood theme for it involving all the Spidey costumes I can find as well as a number of spider·type villains. While I was doing this, I sparked off two side projects: A restoration of my old Venom mood theme and a Spidey mood largely utilizing his classic outfit.

And thus, we have this:

Happy | Sad | Angry

Pretty simple:
  • Download your own set from the bottom link.

  • Find a handy place to host the mood set.

  • Use the Mood Theme Editor to set it up.

  • Prefer you download your own set but you may direct link at your own risk.

falling ass·backwards into a fandom [04 Aug 2006|04:44pm]

[ mood | geeky ]

When Buffy the Vampire Slayer 1st came to TV I didn't watch it from having seen the movie. Which isn't to say I didn't like the film, the extended death scene of Paul Reubens was quite giggly, but it just didn't grab me; I'll watch a bit of it if I stumble across it but otherwise I don't go looking for it. However, a lot of my friends were hooked to the show for any number of reasons so it was often on if I was visiting them.

I don't remember exactly when it was, somewhere around the end of the 2nd Season or the beginning of the 3rd, but I partially heard the end. Never had been around for that part before so I made a point to pay more attention the next time I was around and it ended. I laughed my ass off...

...it may be sad but that little "Grr Arr!" at the end is what got me watching Buffy on a regular basis, and by extension Angel when it branched off. Figured if that little bit was so hilarious the rest of the show must be worth watching.

Can't be that I'm the only one that wound up liking a fandom that they had been die hard set against from the start. Hell, it took much effort but I eventually got ello Mistuh BrandBrand watching Babylon 5, and a few other shows, that he originally resisted with a stranglehold grip from watching because he hadn't seen them from the beginning.

So, what was your fandom of initial avoidance?

What do you know? [31 Jul 2006|08:06am]

[ mood | curious ]

10:59 AM 7/29/06 · Before I get into this, I'd like to make one thing clear. Every so often I'll post one of these inquiries on something fandom related to the various geek type places (usual suspects) I frequent and, more often than not, someone will get on my case for not looking it up myself. The internet is a wide and wonderous place and there is ever so many places that I could no doubt look up whatever it was that I wanted to know...

...which is really kind of a cop·out when you think about it.

I like to go with what I know...and that's a lot if you don't mind my saying so. However there's the little gap of lost memory and certain things that have escaped my attention and some things I've not even considered looking into. When I don't know something my immediate instinct is to look to those I know. We be big geeks, we know much. If one of us doesn't know something then odds are good another has the appropriate gray matter with the info that is required.

It's a friend thing...

...that and I'm usually only online at work and they've blocked the Internet Movie Database for some odd reason. Wikipedia I can access fine but that's not the point.

Question of the Day: I've been taping and watching Angel the Series for quite awhile now. Actually through full series runs about 4 times now but I'm an addict for this show. Currently it comes on twice a day on TNT from 6am-8am...

...but my question.

Who is it that play Conner? Angel's son I mean. At the moment we're at the part where he's still a baby and while I've skimmed the credits I'm not seeing anything about it. He could grow up and be famous someday and it'd be nice to know where I 1st saw him. Granted, most shows use a bunch of babies for any given role, depending on any individual child's disposition that may not suit certain scenes.

So, anybody know?

I'm about as strange as the next guy... [05 Jul 2006|08:01am]

[ mood | good ]

...unfortunately no one's ever quite managed to locate that next guy.

1:09 PM 7/4/06 · Every 4th of July, regardless of whatever plans I may or may not have, I always find the time to watch the movie Independence Day. Not only because it's singular significance to the date but also because it's one of my favorite films. I don't ever really watch it at any other time of the year, excepting when it randomly pops up on television, and it holds the distinction of one of the few films I have next to no issues with.

I'm a big fan of nit·picking the little details. May have to do with being something of a geek...oh hell, I'm a huge geek! For example, I think the desert that Will Smith is lugging the unconcious alien through is where they hold the Burning Man ceremony.

I know from previous posts, because I seem to make mention about this every year, that I'm not the only person that puts this in the player every year around this time. Still, for the sake of curiosity, did you do it this year too?

one little quality bit of nit·pickingCollapse )

Ghost Rider gripes [20 Jun 2006|08:33am]

[ mood | grumpy ]

5:47 AM 6/20/06 · While I suspect I'm going to love this film when it comes out...it hasn't yet so I can be as petty as I want. I've only seen the extended trailer and the international one, the latter which will be included at the end of this post, but I've already seen a number of things that're just bugging me. Some of it I'll probably be able to look beyond, during and after watching it, but at the moment...

All from the trailers:

  • The film lists Johnny Blaze as being the Ghost Rider but the demon's form is that of Daniel Ketch's version of the creature.

  • Ghost Rider's flame isn't supposed to be hot. Being hellfire the only thing it can burn is the souls of others, most people have described the sensation as being exceeedingly cold. However there's a scene where he's roaring down a street and the parking meters along the sides are melting.

  • During Ketch's time as the demon, Blaze came back fearing the new Ghost Rider was the same creature that once possessed him. In contact with him, Blaze's shotgun took on hellfire properties but the demon itself didn't start carrying such a weapon; Ghost Rider uses a number of demonically enhanced spikes and chains. In this movie Blaze has a hellfire shotgun too.

  • About as petty as petty can get: Blaze is supposed to be a strawberry blonde but the film has him with short dark brown hair.

  • I was impressed to see the ancient Western Ghost Rider is in the film. Although a foe of the Blaze form of the creature, it shows that this kind of thing has happened before...even if the old one does ride a demonically charged horse.

  • The special effects look beautiful!

  • The transformation into Ghost Rider, for both Ketch and Blaze, is supposed to be exceedingly bloody. Literally the skull burns its way free, tearing out into the light. It's be cool to see but I kinda doubt its going to happen.

  • Despite all the references to the demon that is the Ghost Rider, bit off from the movie here, both men differed in this somewhat. Blaze was possessed by the demon Zarathos and that's how he became the Ghost Rider; that whole bit on selling his soul is what got the ball rolling. Ketch on the other hand just transformed into Ghost Rider, not at all associated with Zarathos in this case, when he found that bike that never needed refueling. Ketch later learned he didn't need the bike to transform; first it was any bike would do and later he discovered the change came from within himself...he hadn't realized his family had a long history in the occult.
